Not so long ago, Autoblog released a report that claims that GM made the decision to kill the slow-selling Sonic subcompact by the end of this year. Well, we have to refute statements referring to the retirement of the car, simply because the automaker has no intention to do that at all. Instead, both the hatchback and the sedan will receive minor changes for the 2020 MY.
New Exterior Colors
The changes will be barely visible from the outside though. To be more precise, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic is going to change just its color options and that’s pretty much everything from the outside. The subcompact will lose Orange Burst Metallic and Shock paints, but the hatch will get all-new Oasis Blue and Cayenne Orange Metallic colors. Still, both of them will be an extra cost for potential buyers.
There Will Be No Manual ‘Box
As far as we know, there will be no changes inside the car. Okay, there will be one, though it’s not as important for the cabin as it is for the powertrains. According to our insiders, the 2020 Sonic will come without a manual option. Instead, the car will use one a six-speed automatic transmission. The ‘box will be hooked to a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine capable of delivering 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and will send power to front wheels only.
2021 Chevy Sonic To Become Crossover
Instead of dying, the subcompact car will succeed to get a complete redesign. However, allegedly, the second-generation 2021 Chevrolet Sonic will be essentially different from its predecessor.
New Platform And Engines, 9 Gears
Judging by our sources, the company will get rid of the sedan variant, while the hatchback should receive a totally new, crossover-like design. That’s it; the subcompact will get a higher ground clearance and these-days popular SUV guise. Of course, the changes won’t be cosmetic only. Instead, the next-gen Sonic will change its architecture as well. The company will most probably use GM’s new VSS-F platform that will make the 2021 Sonic around 300 pounds lighter when compared to the current model. The redesigned car will most probably get some new options under the hood, as well as a few gears more as an option. We think that the company’s 9-speed Hydra-Matic could become optional.
New-Gen Multimedia And Better Safety
Chevy’s subcompact car is going to get a range of new features too. First of all, the 2021 Chevrolet Sonic will be fitted with a next-generation MyLink infotainment system; plus, the automaker will not skip the chance to add more GM Active Safety.
Stay tuned for updates.
